CAITLIN CLARK RETURNS — TEAM USA CAMP OPENS WITH A STATEMENT, AND THE FEVER STAR IS AT THE CENTER OF IT.P1

Caitlin Clark is officially back where she belongs: on the basketball court, in a structured, high-stakes setting, with the eyes of the sport firmly locked on her. On Friday, the Indiana Fever guard returned to formal action as one of 18 players participating in USA Basketball’s National Team training camp at Duke University, a quiet but powerful milestone after months of injury-related uncertainty.

This is not just another offseason workout. This camp represents Clark’s first true return to competitive rhythm since suffering a right groin injury in mid-July, just days before All-Star Weekend. For a player whose game is built on movement, timing, and relentless offensive pressure, simply being back in a five-on-five environment is newsworthy. Doing it under the USA Basketball banner makes it seismic.

The location itself adds another layer. Duke is now the home base of the national team following the promotion of Kara Lawson to head coach, replacing Cheryl Reeve. Lawson, who has led the Blue Devils since 2020, is beginning a new era — and Clark is one of the most high-profile names stepping into it. That alone signals how seriously USA Basketball views her long-term role.

Clark isn’t alone from Indiana. Aliyah Boston, her Fever teammate and frontcourt anchor, is also in attendance, giving Clark a familiar on-court connection as she eases back into elite-level competition. Both are among 10 players making their national team debuts, a striking number that underscores how transitional this camp truly is.

The full roster reads like a snapshot of women’s basketball across generations: Kahleah Copper, Chelsea Gray, Brittney Griner, Kelsey Plum, Jackie Young, Dearica Hamby, Brionna Jones, Lauren Betts, Cameron Brink, Paige Bueckers, Veronica Burton, Sonia Citron, Kiki Iriafen, Rickea Jackson, Angel Reese, and JuJu Watkins. Notably absent are stars like A’ja Wilson, Napheesa Collier, and Breanna Stewart — omissions that USA Basketball insists should not be overanalyzed. Watkins, still rehabbing from an ACL injury, will attend but not participate.

For Clark, the significance is deeply personal. She has not competed in any formal basketball setting since July. At her exit interview in October, she made it clear that rest would be brief and intentional.

“I don’t really want to lose the stuff I’ve worked on,” Clark said. “There’s some USA basketball stuff I need to get ready for… but more than anything, my main focus is really just getting my body healthy.”

That process has been slow and deliberate. It has taken nearly five months for Clark to progress from rehab to one-on-one work, and finally back to five-on-five play. This camp is not about dominance. It’s about testing her body, rebuilding confidence, and rediscovering rhythm — all under the watchful eyes of national team decision-makers.

She’ll do so with support around her. Fever head coach Stephanie White is serving as one of the court coaches at camp, alongside Natalie Nakase and Nate Tibbetts, giving Clark both continuity and familiarity as she navigates her return. While several Fever players have committed to offseason leagues like Unrivaled or the newly announced Project B, Clark has taken a different route — prioritizing health after appearing in just 13 games last season.

This weekend is a physical test, but it’s also a mental one. Clark isn’t just trying to play again. She’s trying to trust her body again, to lead again, and to prove that her ascent was paused — not derailed.

“I think it’s important that you can become confident in your body again,” Clark said. “That’s probably going to be my main focus.”

USA Basketball camp is only one step on the road toward World Cup competition. But for Caitlin Clark, it may be the most important one yet — the moment where comeback turns into momentum, and questions begin to give way to answers.
