Utah officials say Tyler Robinson, the man suspected of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk, is not cooperating.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox said on September 14: “The suspect has not confessed and is not cooperating, but everyone associated with him is cooperating. I think that is very important,” according to ABC News.
Cox said that investigators are trying to determine the motive for the attack, adding that more information will be updated when the suspect appears in court on September 16 to receive formal charges.
Charlie Kirk, a right-wing activist in the US, was assassinated on September 10 while attending an outdoor event in Salt Lake City, Utah. The suspect, Tyler Robinson, was arrested on September 12 on charges of aggravated murder, obstruction of justice and aggravated battery. Robinson had no previous criminal record.
The incident has raised concerns about escalating tensions and deepening partisan divisions. Governor Cox said investigators found that Robinson had left-leaning political views and disliked Kirk.
“That information came from people around him, his family members and friends,” Cox told CNN.
Cox added that the suspect had a transgender girlfriend, but it was unclear whether this was related to the case.
On September 14, Cox was also asked about information published by The New York Times earlier about a conversation on the Discord application that was said to be related to the suspect. He said that he had identified the suspect’s Discord account, but there was no evidence that Robinson planned an attack or promoted violent ideology.
Governor Cox said on September 12 that Utah would punish the person who assassinated Charlie Kirk very severely. “We will seek the death penalty. I am working with the prosecutor to ensure that,” Cox said.
