The Kansas City Chiefs may have escaped Indianapolis with a win, but the aftermath is far from over. A Chiefs starting player is now reportedly facing a potential $17,389 fine after a highly controversial fourth-quarter call that has both teams — and the entire NFL world — waiting for the league’s official ruling.
The incident occurred late in the game when officials threw a flag on a play the Chiefs insist was completely legal. The Colts, however, argued it was an obvious penalty and demanded clarification from the league after the final whistle. The NFL is expected to review all available video angles, slow-motion footage, and the referee report before issuing an official decision in the coming days.
According to the NFL’s discipline standards, the $17,389 fine is typically associated with violations such as unsportsmanlike conduct, illegal hits, or actions deemed potentially dangerous to player safety. Chiefs fans, though, are furious — calling the flag “ridiculous,” “inconsistent,” and “one of the worst calls of the season.”
The situation is even more heated because the Chiefs had already been on the wrong end of several questionable calls earlier in the game, including a borderline facemask penalty on Jawaan Taylor that wiped out a touchdown, and a questionable offensive pass interference call on Travis Kelce. Meanwhile, Colts fans argued that their team was robbed of a clear defensive penalty on a crucial passing play.
The NFL typically announces disciplinary actions early in the week, meaning both the Chiefs and the Colts — along with millions of fans — are anxiously waiting to see whether the Kansas City starter will be hit with the maximum fine.
If the fine is confirmed, it will only add fuel to the growing fire surrounding officiating consistency in the 2024 season, a topic that has dominated sports talk shows and social media all year.
