Detroit is once again glowing with pride. After years of waiting, the Detroit Tigers have officially announced a $1.7 million bronze statue project to honor Alan Trammell – the legendary captain, loyal icon and heart of gold of the Motor City. For baseball lovers, this is not just a statue… but a belated tribute to a man who lived his life for Detroit.

Trammell, Alan | Baseball Hall of Fame

Trammell – who played 20 full seasons for the Detroit Tigers (1977–1996) – will be erected right outside Comerica Park, among statues of Al Kaline, Ty Cobb and Hank Greenberg. The project will be completed in the summer of 2026, marking the 50th anniversary of Trammell joining the Tigers, the team said.

“This is not just an honor for me,” he said, his voice choking up during the announcement, “but for all the fans who grew up with the sound of bats in Tiger Stadium.”

Trammell was not a flashy star. He did not have the blazing seasons of Miguel Cabrera or the incredible records of Ty Cobb. But to Detroiters, he embodied resilience, humility, and absolute loyalty. Over two decades, he played 2,293 games, recorded more than 2,300 hits, won six All-Star games, four Gold Gloves, and most notably the 1984 World Series, where he won MVP honors for a near-perfect performance.

He was the type of player Detroit has always proudly called “one of our own.”

According to Tigers insiders, the $1.7 million statue project is being funded by a joint fund between the team’s board of directors, local businessmen, and the Tigers’ alumni association. The work will be created by artist Omri Amrany, who has created famous statues of Michael Jordan and Shaquille O’Neal.

The statue will depict Trammell’s iconic double-play dunk to Lou Whitaker – a symbol of teamwork and precision that Detroiters will never forget.

The project is slated to be located on the east corner of Comerica Park, where the sun shines directly on every morning – a way of saying that Alan Trammell’s legacy still shines on Detroit.

For many, this is a belated but meaningful recognition. Trammell was left out of the Hall of Fame several times before being inducted in 2018. Now, at age 67, the Tigers are finally giving him what he deserves: immortality in the city.

Fans flocked to Comerica Park when the news broke, carrying old No. 3 jerseys, tattered tickets from 1984, and tears of nostalgia. “I grew up with Trammell,” one longtime fan said, “and now my son will grow up with his statue.”

Trammell still lives in Michigan, still shows up at practice, still bows his head when his name is called. He doesn’t need big titles—just Detroit remembers him. And now Detroit not only remembers him, but has etched his name in stone, on bronze, and in the heart of the city.

A statue worth $1.7 million.
A life that cannot be measured in money.
A legend – forever Alan Trammell, the heart of the Detroit Tigers.
