FRISCO, Texas — Dak Prescott is trying to keep the Dallas Cowboys united amid one of the most unexpected controversies of the season.
The chaos began when Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made headlines for referencing his massive $100-billion natural gas project, joking that “the oil bounty takes time — just like building a defense.” What may have sounded like a lighthearted remark quickly spiraled into backlash, as frustrated fans accused Jones of being more focused on his business empire than fixing his struggling team.
The Cowboys are currently sitting at 3-4-1, and defensive breakdowns have cost them multiple key games. So when Jones made his “gas bounty” comment, the timing couldn’t have been worse. Social media lit up instantly, with one fan writing: “We don’t need gas, Jerry. We need stops, sacks, and heart.”
Dak Prescott, however, isn’t letting the noise divide the locker room. Speaking to reporters Thursday, the Cowboys quarterback said he completely understands the fans’ frustration — but urged them to keep the faith.
“Look, I get it. I was a Cowboys fan growing up,” Prescott said. “I know what it feels like when things don’t go your way. But Jerry wants to win just as much as we do. That’s all I can tell you.”
Prescott’s calm tone contrasted sharply with the fiery reaction from fans and analysts, many of whom called Jones’ comments “tone-deaf” and “a distraction.”
ESPN’s Marcus Spears, a former Cowboy himself, weighed in: “Jerry’s focus should be on the defense, not drilling for more gas money. That quote didn’t help anyone.”
Still, Prescott emphasized that the team is focused on football, not off-field headlines. “We can’t control what’s said outside,” he added. “All we can do is play better — and we will.”
Inside the Cowboys facility, team sources told reporters that Prescott’s words were “exactly what the locker room needed.”
As Dallas heads into a crucial Week 9 matchup, the message is clear: Dak Prescott is doing damage control, trying to steady the ship before it sinks into another season of unmet expectations.
But for now, Cowboys Nation is left wondering — is their leader’s reassurance enough to calm the storm brewing in Big D?
