SAN FRANCISCO — The Golden State Warriors are facing an unexpected challenge this season: a frontcourt that has struggled to produce consistently. The team’s hopes for stability were pinned on the offseason signing of veteran Al Horford, a seasoned NBA champion brought in to anchor the post. However, the 37-year-old forward has underwhelmed, contributing just 5.8 points and 4.3 assists per game, while shooting a modest 34.3% from the field and 32% from three-point range.
The Warriors’ frontcourt woes have not gone unnoticed, and Sports Illustrated’s Blake Silverman recently suggested a bold solution: pursuing Domantas Sabonis from the Sacramento Kings. Sabonis, a three-time All-Star and one of the NBA’s premier rebounders over the last three seasons, could provide the multi-dimensional presence Golden State desperately needs.
“Another Western Conference rebuild candidate could deal high-earning veterans to gain financial flexibility,” Silverman noted. “Domantas Sabonis should return the most value on the trade market, though clearing Sacramento’s $45-plus million salary over the next two seasons would be the major win.”

Despite a partially torn left meniscus that will sideline Sabonis for three to four weeks, his talent and versatility are undeniable. Standing 6-foot-10, the Gonzaga product averages 17.2 points, 12.3 rebounds, and 3.7 assists with the struggling 3-13 Kings this season, proving he can impact both ends of the floor.
For the Warriors, acquiring Sabonis would address multiple issues at once. Not only would he inject size, scoring, and rebounding into the lineup, but he would also lighten the offensive load on stars like Stephen Curry and Jordan Poole. With Horford failing to deliver the expected impact, Golden State may see Sabonis as the high-reward solution capable of turning their season around.
Sabonis’ situation in Sacramento adds to the intrigue. Despite flashes of brilliance, including a standout 2023 postseason where the Kings pushed the Warriors to seven games, playoff success has largely eluded him. With Sacramento’s current roster unlikely to contend in the near future, a trade would give Sabonis the opportunity to compete for a championship while providing the Kings with financial flexibility to rebuild.

Potential trade suitors include the Los Angeles Clippers, Golden State Warriors, and Detroit Pistons, all teams in need of frontcourt reinforcement. For the Warriors, who have grown weary of Horford’s inconsistency, Sabonis represents an immediate upgrade — a star capable of transforming their struggling interior game into a championship-level asset.
As trade season looms, all eyes will be on Golden State’s front office. Will they pull the trigger and secure Sabonis, or will the Kings demand a prohibitive return? For now, Warriors fans can only speculate — but one thing is clear: adding Domantas Sabonis could reshape the team’s fortunes and provide the kind of post presence the Warriors have lacked all season.
