With her speech on equal rights and school security at the United Nations General Assembly, Emma Watson once again made people admire her tireless efforts to bring equality to women around the world.
Fans of the little witch Hermione in the famous “Harry Potter” series will surely be proud of the beautiful and talented actress Emma Watson when on Tuesday, September 20, Emma attended the 71st United Nations General Assembly in New York to give a speech on gender equality and school safety. This is part of the HeForShe campaign on gender equality of the United Nations, of which Emma was an ambassador two years ago. Throughout the speech, Emma showed important issues, although not new, but still very necessary for women around the world: equality and a safe and healthy school life.
Emma stressed the need to ensure women’s safety at universities. It is a right for female students, not a privilege.
“Despite the advances women have made in society in recent years, rape at universities is still common,” said Emma.
“And more importantly, universities must ensure the safety of women, minorities and anyone who may be vulnerable. It is a right, not a privilege.”
As a feminist and an active campaigner for women’s rights, Emma wants to ensure that women are treated fairly in all areas. If men can be good leaders, so can women, and no one has the right to take away the opportunity to be better and more successful from women.
“When we first leave home to go to university, where we have to work very hard to get where we want to be, we don’t want or have to experience gender discrimination.
We want to be treated with respect, given leadership opportunities and paid fairly.
Universities must teach women that talented people deserve respect and that they can also be leaders at university.”
Even in developing countries, women are still being treated unfairly and neglected. In particular, rape cases in schools are on the rise and many students are sexually assaulted.
Emma Watson ended her speech by emphasizing the role of universities. This will be the place to teach students, guide them in their first steps as adults.
If at each university – each miniature society, students are taught about equal rights, given the opportunity to become leaders, respected and protected, they will continue to strive and strive for those things when they step out into the vast and harsh world outside.
“Universities must be places that stand against all acts of violence. That is why we hope that when students leave university, they will strive to be more and expect a truly equitable society.
Society needs to be fair to women in all areas and universities play an important role as catalysts for that change.”
