Audiences still remember Emma Watson through her role as the smart and lovely witch Hermione, forgetting that she has become a mature and attractive star.
It’s been a long time since Emma Watson left her role as Hermione in the hit Harry Potter series, but she’s finally felt like a grown woman on screen.
The 26-year-old actress, who is the cover girl of Vanity Fair’s March issue, has opened up about her career and the upcoming fairy tale film Beauty and the Beast.
Emma Watson says her role as Belle is a milestone in her acting career. “When I finished this film, I felt like I had made the transition into a woman on screen,” she said.
As a feminist, the British actress used her own character in the film to emphasize her views on modern women. She explained that the character Belle she played was not just a lovely Disney princess, but rather a respectable, intelligent, non-passive and master of her own destiny.
In the 1990 animated version, Belle was just a dutiful daughter who helped her father with his inventions. For this film adaptation, Watson suggested changing the character and the audience’s perception of Belle.
Beauty and the Beast has many different contents from the original animated version, for example, Belle reads more books. Emma decided to create her own story and put it into Belle.
In the film, Belle makes some interesting inventions such as a washing machine and an iron to help her have more time to read books. Therefore, the image of Belle is built as a wise inventor, no less than her father.
Emma Watson added that she has loved the animated version of Beauty and the Beast since she was a child and admires the resilient Belle.
“I had to work very hard to play this role well, including singing which is not my forte. This will be one of the greatest musicals of all time,” the actress confidently said.
Famous since the age of 11 with the role of witch Hermione, the actress – model – social activist frankly admitted that she has not found herself in art. Or in other words, she has not had a role that proves her talent.
Emma Watson, like many other generations of child stars, has not been able to overcome the huge shadow of early success, similar to her two friends in the Harry Potter series, Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint.
The 26-year-old beauty has experienced a long-term psychological crisis due to her early fame. She said that her decision to enroll in Brown University in 2009 was the best thing she ever did, helping her to live true to herself after the glitz of the entertainment world.
Emma Watson always tries to limit the public attention every time she appears. “I try to convince people that I’m incredibly boring, so I need privacy and time to discover myself,” the British actress said.
“I thought about quitting acting because I felt I could no longer control myself,” she said. This has led Emma Watson to turn down many roles she felt were not suitable and only participate in a few small projects she really liked since the last Harry Potter film, released in 2011.
The talented star admitted that there were extremely difficult times in her career. Watson has been ridiculed by film producers countless times: “You are making the biggest mistake of your life by throwing away such a great momentum”.
One of Emma Watson’s missed opportunities was the role of Mia in La La Land – the character that helped actress Emma Stone win the Oscar for Best Actress.
Many people said that she must have been very regretful and angry for missing out on the opportunity to appear in a film that “won the hearts” of the world and had the opportunity to be honored at the most prestigious film awards ceremony on the planet.
Emma Watson denied all and said: “The Oscar award is something I have never taken seriously. I just want to be an actor who can convey all the messages of the film, bringing it to the hearts of the audience”.
With the films La La Land or Cinderella (2015), the beauty refused for the simple reason that “she felt it was not suitable”. In the eyes of many producers, Emma Watson was even commented as “arrogant, snobbish and star-sick”.
They thought that the reasons Emma Watson gave were “silly”, for example, filming would affect her classes or she simply had to go home and play with her cat.
“People have blamed me and kept calling me crazy. But in fact, I am completely sane. I know what I am doing and need to find something to express perfectly”, Emma Watson.
And so, the witch Hermione is only the past. Emma Watson is now an independent, self-sufficient woman and is on her way to finding her own unique artistic personality.
