According to Reuters, in a decision announced on January 12, U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan in Manhattan said it was too early to dismiss Prince Andrew’s efforts to cast doubt on the claims brought by Virginia Giuffre. Giuffre alleges that the Duke of York sexually abused her and intentionally caused her emotional distress.

The judge stated that Prince Andrew would have the chance to defend his position in court. This ruling allows Giuffre’s lawsuit against the prince to move forward as scheduled, with a trial possibly taking place later this year.

Although Prince Andrew faces no criminal charges, his ties to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein—who died by suicide in jail in 2019—have severely damaged his reputation and forced him to step back from royal duties.

Andrew has denied Giuffre’s accusations that he forced her into sex more than 20 years ago at the London home of Epstein’s former associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, and abused her at two other Epstein properties.

On January 4, the prince’s lawyers revealed a 2009 settlement between Epstein and Giuffre in which Epstein paid her to resolve past disputes. They argued this agreement should shield Andrew from the lawsuit. Judge Kaplan, however, noted that the wording of the 2009 deal left open questions about whether Andrew or others in similar positions could be protected from future claims.

Such agreements, the judge explained, could potentially limit plaintiffs like Giuffre from pursuing additional litigation, even against third parties.

Meanwhile, The New York Times observed that Queen Elizabeth II is preparing to mark her 70th year on the throne in February 2022—a historic milestone for the monarchy. Yet the looming sexual abuse lawsuit against her son, Prince Andrew, threatens to cast a shadow over the celebrations.Mỹ sẽ mở phiên tòa xử vụ kiện hoàng tử Anh Andrew vào cuối năm 2022 - Ảnh 1.
