ATLANTA — On a warm September night in 2003, Greg Maddux once again turned a baseball diamond into a clinic. The Atlanta Braves’ 8–0 rout of the Florida Marlins wasn’t merely another late-season victory; it was a landmark moment that sealed Maddux’s 16th consecutive season with at least 15 wins, a feat unmatched in Major League history and a testament to his extraordinary precision.
Maddux, known to teammates and rivals as “The Professor,” didn’t overpower hitters with velocity. Instead, he dissected them with movement, location, and an almost psychic understanding of timing. That night at Turner Field, he spun seven scoreless innings, scattering six hits without issuing a walk. Every pitch seemed to nick a corner or dive just beneath a flailing bat.
“I just try to hit the glove,” Maddux said afterward with typical understatement. “If I can keep the ball where I want it, good things happen.”
His milestone underscored an era of remarkable consistency.
