With profound sorrow, the Jane Goodall Institute announced this morning the passing of its beloved founder, Dr. Jane Goodall, at the age of 91. She died peacefully in her sleep while in Los Angeles, where she had been continuing her mission to inspire hope and action through her U.S. speaking tour.
Dr. Goodall forever changed the way the world understands chimpanzees, wildlife, and our shared environment. Her groundbreaking research in Gombe National Park, launched in 1960, remains the longest-running study of wild chimpanzees in history. Beyond science, she became a global voice for compassion, conservation, and the power of young people to shape the future. Through the Jane Goodall Institute and her youth-led movement Roots & Shoots, now active in more than 75 countries, her vision continues to grow stronger each day.
The Institute extends heartfelt gratitude to supporters and invites all to honor Dr. Goodall’s remarkable legacy by sharing personal tributes and carrying forward the hope she so deeply believed in.
