The Dallas Cowboys have announced the creation of a memorial fund in honor of Marshawn Kneeland, the 24-year-old defensive lineman who tragically passed away last week. The fund will support his pregnant girlfriend and the unborn child he leaves behind, serving as both a tribute to his memory and a gesture of compassion from the Cowboys organization.
Kneeland’s death shocked the NFL community and devastated teammates who viewed him as a rising star with a bright future. The young player, known for his infectious energy and humility, joined the Cowboys earlier this year and quickly made a strong impression in the locker room. His passing, which occurred during the team’s bye week, was reported as an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound following a brief police pursuit.
Head coach Brian Schottenheimer spoke emotionally about the loss during a team press conference. “His smile could take you to your knees,” he said, pausing to hold back tears. “My heart is heavy. Our team’s heart is heavy.” The coach emphasized that the memorial fund was inspired by the players’ desire to help Kneeland’s loved ones. “We want to make sure she is taken care of, and that the baby is taken care of for the rest of their lives,” Schottenheimer added.
In the days following Kneeland’s passing, the Cowboys held a candlelight vigil outside AT&T Stadium. Players, staff, and fans gathered to share memories and honor the young athlete’s legacy. Several teammates wore T-shirts bearing Kneeland’s name and number, while the team also announced plans to wear helmet decals in his memory throughout the remainder of the season.
The organization has also provided grief counseling and mental health resources to players and staff affected by the tragedy. “We don’t move on, but we do move forward,” Schottenheimer said, echoing a message of unity and healing.
Kneeland’s death serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the personal struggles many athletes face behind the scenes. Yet in tragedy, his teammates and the Cowboys community have come together to ensure that his legacy — and his child’s future — will be cared for.
The Marshawn Kneeland Memorial Fund is now open for donations, with all proceeds directed toward supporting his unborn child and honoring the life of a teammate gone far too soon.
