Tacoma, Washington – A terrifying military accident unfolded on the evening of September 17, 2025, when a Black Hawk MH-60 helicopter crashed during a training flight near Lewis-McChord Army Base in Washington state. Onboard were four elite special forces soldiers from the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, also known as the “Night Stalkers.”

The crash occurred around 9 p.m. near Summit Lake, roughly 35 miles west of the base. The impact sparked a fire covering nearly one acre, severely complicating rescue operations. Emergency teams, including the Guardian 1 helicopter unit and specialized ground rescue crews, faced extremely challenging terrain and high temperatures while trying to reach the site.

The condition of the four soldiers remains unknown, and the cause of the crash is under active investigation. A spokesperson for the Army Special Operations Command, Colonel Allie Scott, described the area as difficult to access, adding another layer of challenge for rescuers.
This incident marks one of the most serious recent training accidents involving military helicopters in the region. Earlier this year, in March 2025, another helicopter from the same unit crashed nearby, injuring two pilots.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation, and families of the soldiers have been notified. Updates are expected as rescue and investigation efforts continue.
