CLEVELAND, Ohio — A horrific scene unfolded at Progressive Field as Cleveland Guardians hitter David Fry was hit in the face by a 99 MPH fastball during a game against the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night, September 23, 2025.
In the sixth inning, with two players on base and no one out, Fry attempted a bunt. However, Tigers starting pitcher Tarik Skubal’s fastball was too close and instead of making contact with the bat, the ball hit Fry in the face. Fry immediately fell to the ground in pain, blood pouring from his nose.

“I can’t believe this is happening. The ballpark went dead,” one fan tweeted after witnessing the scene.
Fry was taken off the field by ambulance and taken to Cleveland Clinic for evaluation and observation. Despite the seriousness of his condition, Fry was conscious and was told he would not require surgery. Fry suffered a broken nose and multiple facial bones, and is expected to recover in 6–8 weeks, according to a team statement.
“David is in stable condition and will not require surgery. We hope to have him back for the start of next season,” Guardians head coach Stephen Vogt said.
Tarik Skubal, who threw the injuring pitch, expressed concern and said he had reached out to Fry to check on his health.
“It’s part of the game, but I’m worried about David. Hopefully he’ll be back soon,” Skubal said.
Despite losing Fry, the Guardians won 5–2 over the Tigers, tying them for the AL Central lead. However, Fry’s absence will be a major test for the team in the coming weeks.
The global baseball community is praying for Fry’s speedy recovery and his return to the field next season.
