Travis Kelce drops major retirement hint minutes after Chiefs beat Commanders with 'how long' message

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has accomplished nearly everything an NFL player could dream of across his 13-year career — Pro Bowls, All-Pro honors, Super Bowl titles, franchise records, and a résumé that will almost certainly send him to Canton someday. Yet Kelce revealed this week that there’s still one experience he’s never had on his football journey: playing in a Thanksgiving Day game. And according to the star tight end, the thought of finally getting that opportunity has him “fired up.”

Kelce spoke about the possibility during a recent media session, explaining that while the Chiefs have played in countless prime-time and postseason matchups, they’ve never landed on the NFL’s iconic holiday slate during his tenure. “It’s one of those traditions you grow up watching,” Kelce said. “Turkey, family, and football — that’s what Thanksgiving is all about. Just the idea of being part of that feels special.”

The NFL’s Thanksgiving lineup has long been a stage reserved for some of the league’s biggest moments, with generations of families tuning in as part of their holiday ritual. Kelce said he has vivid childhood memories of watching the Lions and Cowboys host their annual games, imagining what it would feel like to compete under that spotlight.

“To play on a day when the whole country is already sitting down and watching together? That’s a different kind of energy,” he said. “I’d love to feel that for myself.”

Teammates echoed the excitement, noting that Kelce thrives in high-profile environments and embraces the emotion attached to big moments. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes said the tight end’s enthusiasm was contagious, adding, “Anytime you hear Trav talk about football with that much passion, it fires all of us up.”

While the league has not yet finalized its holiday schedule, the possibility of Kansas City being selected has generated speculation among fans, especially given the Chiefs’ rising popularity and status as perennial contenders. Many argue that placing Kelce — one of the sport’s most recognizable figures — on Thanksgiving would be a ratings win.

Whether the Chiefs ultimately receive that holiday spotlight remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: if Travis Kelce gets the chance to take the field on Thanksgiving, he’ll be embracing the moment with all the enthusiasm that has defined his career.
