Former special counsel Jack Smith provided lawmakers with significant updates on ongoing investigations into Donald Trump, sharing findings that suggest strong evidence of criminal activity. According to a report from the Associated Press, Smith told lawmakers behind closed doors that his team had uncovered “proof beyond a reasonable doubt” that Trump criminally conspired to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Smith also revealed that investigators found “powerful evidence” that Trump unlawfully kept classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate and obstructed efforts by authorities to retrieve them. Smith emphasized that his decisions to pursue these cases were guided by the facts and the law, and were not influenced by political motivations. He made it clear that, regardless of Trump’s political affiliation, he would have pursued the investigations with the same level of rigor.
However, Smith noted that the Justice Department ultimately dropped the cases after Trump was reelected due to a longstanding policy that prohibits the indictment of a sitting president. The cases surrounding the election-related actions and classified document handling have been the subject of intense scrutiny and public debate.
Smith’s testimony came during a closed-door appearance before the House Judiciary Committee, which is conducting its own investigation into the Trump probes. Following the closed session, Trump publicly stated that he would prefer Smith to testify publicly, increasing the pressure for transparency and accountability in these high-stakes investigations.
As the situation unfolds, these investigations remain central to ongoing discussions about accountability, the rule of law, and the balance between legal processes and political power.
