The Chicago Cubs and their fans are going through an emotional few days as news of Kyle Hendricks, the legendary “The Professor,” expected to retire after the 2025 season began to spread. Although there has been no official announcement, in a rare public address, Hendricks expressed his heartfelt feelings, deeply touching the Cubs Nation community.
“Whether I continue to play or not,” Hendricks shared, “my heart is with my beloved Cubs family. I am forever grateful for every moment at Wrigley Field, every cheer from the stands, and all the love the fans have shown me throughout my career.”
Hendricks wasn’t the type of pitcher who stood out for his speed, but over the course of more than a decade with the Cubs, he became the heartbeat of the team thanks to his intelligence, grit, and calm demeanor. He will forever be remembered for his historic 2016 game, when he helped the Cubs reach their first World Series in 71 years, paving the way for a championship that ended the “108-year curse.”
“Kyle was someone who we felt safe stepping out onto the mound,” a former teammate recalled. “He didn’t need 100 mph, he just needed composure and accuracy to make a difference.”
After leaving the Cubs at the end of the 2024 season, Hendricks signed a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Angels. Despite his efforts to contribute to the team, he was unable to recapture his peak form. Insiders say he has shared his intention to retire after this season. However, his latest statement suggests that Hendricks is still thinking carefully, while also affirming his undying connection to the Cubs.
On social media, thousands of messages from Cubs Nation have flooded in: “The Professor is more than just a pitcher, he is my childhood memory,” one fan wrote. Another was more emotional: “If this is my last season, I will go to Wrigley just to say thank you.”
Hendricks was once seen as the face of stability, a loyal player who rarely sought the limelight. Now, as his career comes to an end, he remains the same — quiet, humble, but full of emotional weight.
“The best part,” Hendricks added, “is that I got to live the moment with the Cubs and the fans. That’s something I’ll carry with me forever, no matter what tomorrow brings.”
For the Cubs, the Hendricks era may be coming to an end, but the love and legacy of “The Professor” will surely live on in the hearts of Chicago fans.
