After a disappointing season that saw the Houston Astros miss the playoffs for the first time since 2016, rumors of the legendary Jeff Bagwell returning to lead his hometown team are stirring up the fan community.
The Astros recently made a major overhaul of their coaching staff and medical department after finishing the 2025 season with an 87-75 record, not enough to make the playoffs. Coaches Alex Cintrón, Troy Snitker, and Michael Collins were fired, while head medical officer Jeremiah Randall was not renewed. However, head coach Joe Espada and general manager Dana Brown remained.
Jeff Bagwell currently serves as Senior Advisor to the Astros Owner and Baseball Operations. In this role, he is directly involved in decisions regarding player development, scouting, and the team’s long-term strategy.
Despite his long absence from the field, Bagwell still maintains a deep influence in the organization and is considered a trusted companion of owner Jim Crane.
As the Astros are looking for a new wind, many fans and baseball experts have questioned whether Bagwell could return to lead the team. Previously, in an interview in 2022, Bagwell affirmed that he had no intention of becoming the Astros’ general manager.
However, with recent changes in the coaching staff and Espada’s lack of outstanding achievements, the possibility of Bagwell returning to the head coach role is not impossible.
Although there is no official information, but with the influence and deep love for the hometown team, Jeff Bagwell’s return as head coach of the Houston Astros is a possibility worth considering. Fans are waiting for the next developments and hoping for a promising 2026 season.
