BREAKING: Mayor Zohran Mamdani hits the ground running with a slew of historic executive orders to protect renters and fix the housing crisis — and even inspected apartments in person.

Real leadership has finally come to New York City…
“Today, on the first day of this new administration, on the day where so many rent payments are due, we will not wait to deliver action. We will stand up on behalf of the tenants of this city,” Mamdani announced. “These are sweeping measures. But it is just the beginning of a comprehensive effort to champion the cause of tenants too long ignored and homes too expensive.”
Just hours after being inaugurated yesterday, the new mayor signed three executive orders designed to curtail abuses by landlords and fast-track housing development.
One of the orders reestablishes the crucial Mayor’s Office to Protect Tenants which “will serve as a central coordinating body to defend tenants’ rights, stand up to landlords, and ensure city agencies act swiftly on behalf of renters facing unsafe or illegal conditions.”
Unlike previous mayors (and the felon currently occupying the Oval Office), Mamdani is committed to protecting the living standards of normal Americans rather than shielding the profits of wealthy property owners and corporations.
“We will not compromise on housing quality,” said Mamdani. “If your landlord does not responsibly steward your home, city government will step in. We will make sure that 311 violations are resolved and we will hold slumlords to account for hazardous and dangerous threats to your wellbeing.”
“You cannot hold landlords who violate the law to account unless you have a proven, principled and tireless fighter at the helm,” he added. “That is why I am proud today to announce my friend Cea Weaver as the director of the newly reinvigorated Mayor’s Office to Protect Tenants.”
His second executive order created the Land Inventory Fast Track (LIFT) Task Force which is designed to “review city-owned properties and identify sites suitable for housing development no later than July 1, 2026.”
The third order created the Streamlining Procedures to Expedite Equitable Development (SPEED) Task Force which will “identify and remove bureaucratic and permitting barriers that drive up costs and slow housing construction and lease-up, making it more affordable to build and easier to access housing across New York City.”
Taken in totality, these executive orders amount to a radical transformation of New York City’s housing status quo that will better serve the working people who live there.
In addition to signing the executive orders, Mamdani went in person to inspect housing conditions in the city. One viral clip showed him looking at broken flooring, an eroding bath tub, and rust-covered pipes. The mayor was visibly disgusted with the conditions and asked if the landlord had been informed. Clearly, the days of New York City’s slumlords are numbered.
This is what it looks like when a politician actually cares about improving the lives of his constituents. Zohran is young, full of energy, and committed to implementing lasting improvements in the city that he loves.
