Six-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady leaves the New England Patriots after 20 years.

“While my football journey will continue elsewhere, I will always remember the accomplishments I made with this great team,” Brady wrote on Twitter. “I have had the honor of knowing and making great memories with all of you. The past two decades have been the happiest of my life. I truly love and am grateful for my time in New England.”

Brady, who turns 43 in August, is widely considered the greatest player in NFL history, having won six Super Bowls and a host of other prestigious records. In 2019, Brady, at 41 years and six months, became the oldest player to win the Super Bowl, a sporting event that set a record for viewership in the United States.

Tom Brady was not highly regarded when he first turned professional. He entered the NFL in 2000 as the 199th overall pick and has played for the New England Patriots ever since. Brady plays as a quarterback, the most important position in football, the equivalent of a quarterback in soccer. Only 5% of players maintain their careers in the league until age 42, and Brady is one of that group.

In all of Brady’s seasons as quarterback, the Patriots have won more than they lost in the regular season. In 2019, Brady was given a two-year contract extension by the Patriots, earning $23 million per season. Brady’s final season with the Patriots ended in an unexpected loss to the Tennessee Titans in the playoffs. The two sides reached an agreement to terminate the contract and Brady became a free agent today, March 18.

Although Brady is no longer at his peak, many NFL teams are willing to recruit him. The three-time league player of the year has not revealed his next destination, but US media revealed that Brady could join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Las Vegas Raiders or return to his hometown of California to play for the Los Angeles Chargers.
