Today, the Toronto Blue Jays announced a decision that shocked the baseball world: Vladimir Guerrero Jr., the team’s bright star, signed a 14-year contract extension worth $500 million, officially becoming a permanent player of this team.

At this price, Guerrero Jr.’s contract is one of the largest in Major League Baseball history, second only to Juan Soto’s $765 million contract and Shohei Ohtani’s $700 million contract. Notably, this contract has no deferral clause, no “opt-out” clause, and no transfer clause, showing the Blue Jays’ strong commitment to Guerrero Jr.

The deal is notable for its $325 million signing bonus, which represents 65% of the total contract value. The bonus will be paid out over 14 years, ensuring Guerrero Jr. receives a steady income and is not affected by external factors such as labor strikes. Each year, the bonus will be calculated into the average annual value of the contract, helping the Blue Jays maintain financial flexibility in the future.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr., 26, expressed his joy at continuing to be associated with the team that helped him develop his career since he was a teenager of 16. He shared: “I am very happy to stay in Toronto. This team is like a second family to me, and I look forward to finishing my career here.”

“This is a significant moment in the history of the team,” said Blue Jays CEO Mark Shapiro. “Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is not only a star on the field, but also an icon for the city of Toronto and fans across Canada.”

Since making his MLB debut in 2019, Guerrero Jr. has quickly established himself as a player. He is one of the Blue Jays’ most decorated players, with notable achievements including:
4 All-Star Game appearances (2021–2024)
2 Silver Slugger Awards (2021 & 2024)
Hank Aaron Award (2021)
Gold Glove Award (2022)
All-Star Game MVP (2021)
Home Run Derby Champion (2023)
2 Tip O’Neill Award Winners (2021 & 2024)

With this new contract, Guerrero Jr. will continue to be a mainstay in the Blue Jays’ lineup, contributing to the team’s goal of winning the World Series for the first time since 1993.

This event is not only a turning point in Guerrero Jr.’s career, but also marks a new chapter in the history of the Toronto Blue Jays.
