In one of the strangest viral moments of the NFL season, Kansas City Chiefs superstar Patrick Mahomes found himself at the center of a false and sensational rumor involving political activist Charlie Kirk and global pop icon Bad Bunny.
The controversy began when a series of fabricated social-media posts claimed Mahomes had joined a supposed “boycott” of the Super Bowl halftime show — allegedly in protest of Bad Bunny’s rumored involvement and supposed “political messaging.” The posts further suggested Mahomes was collaborating with Charlie Kirk’s conservative group, Turning Point USA, to “restore values to the NFL.”
None of it was true.
Representatives for Mahomes swiftly shut down the allegations, calling them “completely baseless and fabricated.” Still, by the time the clarification came, screenshots of the fake quote had already been shared thousands of times across X (formerly Twitter), Reddit, and several Facebook fan groups.
Media analysts noted how quickly misinformation spreads when celebrity names and political themes collide. “It’s the perfect storm,” one sports journalist remarked. “You take a beloved athlete like Mahomes, add a polarizing figure like Charlie Kirk, and throw in a pop culture lightning rod like Bad Bunny — it’s guaranteed to go viral, truth or not.”
The rumor caught fire just days after the Chiefs’ dramatic win, with fans jokingly asking if Mahomes had traded his helmet for a podium. Others expressed frustration that false political narratives were once again being attached to athletes who’ve stayed largely apolitical throughout their careers.
Bad Bunny’s team has not commented, but the artist’s fanbase quickly rallied online to defend both performers, calling the situation “a reminder of how fast the internet can twist anything into outrage.”
As of now, the origin of the fake story remains unknown, though several bot-linked accounts have been flagged for pushing the narrative.
Patrick Mahomes has chosen not to dwell on the drama. In a brief post-game interview, he said simply:
“I play football. That’s what I focus on.”
With the Chiefs eyeing another deep playoff run, Mahomes seems intent on letting his arm — not online rumors — do the talking.
