President Donald Trump announced earlier this week that his eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., is engaged to socialite Bettina Anderson.

The engagement, which the president revealed at the White House on Monday, Dec. 15, has reportedly pleased Donald, 79, who seemingly soured on Don Jr.’s previous fiancée, Kimberly Guilfoyle, a political source tells PEOPLE.

“The president is happy with the way Bettina looks, and wants his son to be satisfied in his next mate,” the source says. “The Trumps were happy with [Don Jr.’s first wife] Vanessa, and also with Kim at first until she became a grandstander and attempted to put too much media and MAGA attention on herself.”

PEOPLE reached out to Guilfoyle’s spokesperson for comment on the source’s allegation.

Don Jr. got engaged to Guilfoyle in 2020 after two years of dating. The two never officially announced their split, but PEOPLE learned in December 2024 that Don Jr. and Anderson had been quietly dating for about six months.

Prior to his relationship with Guilfoyle, Don Jr. was married to ex-wife Vanessa Trump for 12 years. Vanessa filed for divorce in 2018, but she still shows up to some family gatherings because they share five children: Kai, 18; Donald III, 16; Tristan, 14; Spencer, 13; and Chloe, 11.

The source tells PEOPLE that the president had to warm up to Anderson, but that she ultimately learned how to fit in with the powerful family.

“At first Bettina’s eagerness to join forces with the Trumps was off-putting to the president, but she has toned down, realizing that she has to look beautiful, stand still, and be subordinate to anything the Trumps do,” the source says. “She has managed to mellow out enough to be accepted.”

Another source from Mar-a-Lago, Donald’s Palm Beach club, tells PEOPLE they were surprised Don Jr., 47, proposed so soon into his relationship with Anderson, 39. The news of their engagement comes one year after the news of his split from Guilfoyle, 56, became public.

“I thought a proposal was going to be later, but not too early for Bettina,” the club source says. “This is what she wanted all along, and she is happy.”

Don Jr. and Anderson were first spotted at brunch in August 2024, as seen in photos published by the Daily Mail. At the time of their outing, he was still believed to be engaged to Guilfoyle.

On Dec. 9, 2024, he was photographed with Anderson in a more intimate manner, holding hands while taking a nighttime stroll around Palm Beach, Fla. The Daily Mail reported at the time that the pair had been celebrating Anderson’s birthday.

On Dec. 10, one day after his son was spotted with Anderson, Donald announced on Truth Social that Guilfoyle would be named U.S. ambassador to Greece, sending her overseas for the assignment. The Senate later confirmed her nomination in September.

A source told PEOPLE at the time of Guilfoyle’s ambassador nomination that the Trump family was unhappy with her, saying, “Kim is not a nice person and always wants the limelight.”

They added, “Don and Kim are over but they are going to offer her some kind of an administrative position so she will be happy.”

Shortly after Donald announced his nomination of Guilfoyle for U.S. ambassador to Greece, a political source told PEOPLE that Anderson and Don Jr. were hoping to forge a path without her.

“Bettina wants Kim out of the area,” the source said, adding, “They are trying to send Kim abroad. They waited for the election to pass but they didn’t want the split to get in the way of anything to hurt Donald in the election.”

Weeks later, Anderson appeared as Don Jr.’s guest to the Trump family’s New Year’s Eve celebration at Mar-a-Lago, then accompanied him to his father’s presidential inauguration in January 2025. A source told PEOPLE in February, “Bettina seems great for him.”

Don Jr. recently threw Anderson a birthday party, another source tells PEOPLE.

“Bettina said they are really in love and so happy together,” the source says. “He gave her a beautiful birthday party, and does nice things for her to show his affection.”

Anderson is the daughter of philanthropists Harry Loy Anderson Jr. and Inger Anderson, and works as an advocate for Audrey Gruss’ mental health foundation, Hope for Depression Research Foundation.

She’s also affiliated with Project Paradise, a Florida conservation effort, and spends time with the Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County “every week,” a Palm Beach insider previously told PEOPLE.
