On September 16, the private funeral of Duchess Katharine, wife of the Duke of Kent and cousin-in-law of Queen Elizabeth II, was held at Westminster Cathedral. She died at Kensington Palace on September 4, aged 92.
The funeral was attended by many members of the royal family such as King Charles III , the Prince and Princess of Wales, and the Duchess of Edinburgh. Only Queen Camilla was absent due to severe sinusitis.

Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, both from the Royal Lodge in Windsor, were seated in the front row, next to the King, Prince William and Princess Kate. This was notable because Andrew had stepped back from his royal duties following the scandal involving billionaire pedophile Jeffrey Epstein.
In the solemn atmosphere after the funeral, Andrew suddenly burst into laughter while talking to Fergie. The moment he stood right next to William made the situation even more awkward, as the prince was clearly shy and tried to keep his distance.
As the senior members said their goodbyes, Andrew was caught standing alone. William and Kate quickly left as King Charles III got into his carriage.

Andrew’s appearance comes as the Epstein scandal has been revived. A “birthday book” has been revealed, revealing the relationships of many powerful figures with Epstein. Among them is Andrew, who was accused of sexual abuse by Virginia Giuffre – a prominent victim – when she was just 17 years old.
Andrew denies the allegations but reached an out-of-court settlement with Giuffre in 2022, reportedly worth more than £12 million. However, Giuffre’s family has called for a thorough investigation. Her brother, Sky Roberts, said: “Whether a president or a prince is guilty, they should be in jail for life.”

The funeral on September 16 was the first time in modern times that the British royal family held a Catholic Mass for a member of the royal family. The coffin of the Duchess of Kent was draped in the royal flag and carried into the church in a solemn ceremony, escorted by the Royal Dragoon Guards. Her grandchildren joined in reading prayers. The Pope also sent a special message to remember the late Duchess.
