The Spanish giants Real Madrid announced a medical report on Friday, stating that tests revealed an injury to Rudiger’s rectus femoris muscle, and further examinations are pending.
“Following the tests, Rudiger has been diagnosed with a left leg rectus femoris muscle injury. The situation is still evolving,” Real Madrid’s official website reported.
Rudiger will have to wait for additional tests in the coming days, but he is likely to be sidelined for at least three months. He has only appeared once in La Liga this season, after being unavailable for the opening match due to a suspension from a red card at the end of last season. The 32-year-old center-back made 55 appearances for Real Madrid last season despite suffering a muscle injury and a lateral meniscus tear, a knee-related injury.
Losing Antonio Rudiger is unwelcome news for Real Madrid. However, the situation is not as severe as last season, considering the summer transfer addition of Dean Huijsen and the return of Eder Militao, who showed excellent form during the preseason.
Additionally, coach Xabi Alonso still has David Alaba and Raul Asencio as backups, so many believe he will not face difficulties in rotating the squad. This could also be an opportune moment for the promising young player Joan Martinez, who made a strong impression last summer, to get playing time.
Nevertheless, Eder Militao and Dean Huijsen are certain to be the two starting center-backs for Real Madrid in the immediate future.
