Kate Middleton revealed that her children were envious of her latest royal engagement.
On Oct. 2, Princess Kate, 43, toured RAF Coningsby for the first time since King Charles appointed her as its Royal Honorary Air Commodore for a firsthand introduction to the base and its work as part of the Royal Air Force.
The Princess of Wales met Quick Reaction Alert personnel, checked out a Typhoon aircraft, explored the Typhoon Future Synthetic Training facility and more during the packed stop, and said that her kids had wished they could have come.
“My children were very sad. The boys, particularly,” Princess Kate told Robin Sansum, 10, Hello! magazine reported.
Princess Kate and Prince William are parents to Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7, and Kate also spoke about her youngest son’s aviation dreams.
“She was saying that Louis fancies becoming a pilot,” said Robin’s stepmother, Jo Sweeney.
Sweeney is a business support officer at RAF Coningsby, and Princess Kate’s final stop of the day on Thursday was meeting families of personnel stationed at the base who are essential to providing support for those who serve.
While Kate revealed Louis’ goal, she specified that she won’t shy from teaching him about all the hard work that goes into it.
Hello! reported that the Princess of Wales said, “I’m going to tell them it takes eight years and a lot of hard work.”
Prince William, 43, and Princess Kate have a personal connection to the Royal Air Force, as it was the British Army branch that William trained and served with before taking on a full-time royal role in 2017. There are also pilots on both sides of the family.
Princess Kate’s late grandfather Captain Peter Middleton was a RAF pilot and even reportedly served as Prince Philip’s copilot during a tour of South America in 1962.
In July 2023, the Prince and Princess of Wales brought all three children to the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, treating them to a day out at the world’s largest military air show
“The family were all looking forward to the trip,” a royal source told PEOPLE at the time about the special day out.
