HOUSTON, Texas — A deep sadness has gripped the baseball community after Rob Mallicoat, a talented former pitcher once considered a shining jewel of the Houston Astros, died at the age of 60 after a long battle with colon cancer. The news, confirmed by the team on Tuesday morning, brought tears to many fans and former teammates.

Mallicoat, born in 1965 in Oregon, was a first-round pick of the Astros in the 1984 MLB Draft. He was hailed as “the most promising young pitcher the Astros system had produced since the 1980s.” In 1986, he was voted the organization’s Top Prospect — a future seemingly destined to shine brightly on the big stage.

“Rob was a friend, a teammate, and a symbol of grit. He was always fighting – on the field and off,” said a close friend from the 1990s Astros roster.

In his legendary 1985 season at Single-A Osceola, Mallicoat went 16–6 with a 1.36 ERA, making him a name that every scout looked up to. The Astros believed they had found “the Houston version of Tom Glavine.” But fate took a turn. Repeated shoulder and Achilles injuries kept him from reaching the heights everyone had dreamed of.

In the 1991 season, Mallicoat still managed to leave a memorable mark at Dodger Stadium, throwing three perfect innings and recording the only save of his MLB career. The image of him walking down the mound, head held high, became a symbol of the resilience of a player who fought to the last breath.

After retiring in 1995, Rob did not choose to hide. He turned to the field of information technology, holding a senior management position at Microsoft, leading many major projects for nearly three decades. “He had leadership, vision – and was still the passionate person we knew in the locker room,” a Microsoft colleague wrote on social media.

Throughout his battle with cancer, Mallicoat never let himself become pessimistic. He still appeared at meetings of former Astros players, still smiling when talking about the team he loved. “A warrior who never gave up – that’s how he wanted to be remembered,” his son shared.

As the news spread, social media was flooded with condolences. Astros fans changed their profile pictures to Mallicoat’s jersey number. Minute Maid Park – the team’s home field – also flew its flags at half-staff, as a tribute to the man who once wore the jersey with all his heart.

“Rob didn’t have the longest or most illustrious career,” said a former Astros manager. “But he was someone we were always proud of—because he lived, he pitched, he loved this team with all his heart.”
