Los Angeles, CA — The MLB trade season is heating up, and one of the biggest challenges for the Los Angeles Dodgers is securing a quality closer — someone who can close out big games that the team often stumbles into late. According to Sports Illustrated, the top candidate is Edwin Díaz, a free agent with 253 saves in his career — and the Dodgers are seen as a “perfect landing spot.”

The team’s payroll is reportedly high, and managers can afford a big contract if the price is right.

Additionally, the performance of the Dodgers’ bullpen last season was a big issue: Tanner Scott, considered the team’s key closer, had a disappointing season with 10 saves and a 4.74 ERA.

This creates an urgent need to sign an experienced, consistent, and reliable closer like Díaz.

In addition, according to SI analysis, signing Díaz would not only add a great shutout pitcher, but also strengthen the competitive spirit in the postseason — where every high-leverage out could decide fate.

However, pursuing Díaz carries risks. If they sign him to a big contract, the Dodgers will have to ensure that he maintains a high level of performance — as investing heavily in an inconsistent closer could backfire. Additionally, the free-agent market is always volatile: there are many other names like Devin Williams and Pete Fairbanks who are considered potential targets.

Another point: The Dodgers have to consider the balance between spending a lot of money on a former All-Star closer and developing internal factors. If they choose to sign Díaz, it would send a clear message that they’re aiming high for next season—not just to chase, but to dominate.

Finally, if the deal goes through, it could mark a major turning point in the Dodgers’ “buying the best” strategy. They’re in a “big spend” position, and bringing in Edwin Díaz could be the final piece to the puzzle—or the riskiest decision of the season.
