Sophie Cunningham has never been one to filter her words — and this time, an NFL legend found himself squarely in her crosshairs. The Indiana Fever guard, who has quickly become a fan favorite both for her play and her personality, made waves after delivering a blunt, headline-grabbing take on Tom Brady that instantly ignited conversation across the sports world.
Cunningham’s popularity in Indiana is no accident. In her first season with the Fever, she averaged 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.2 assists across 30 games, playing a key role in the team’s Commissioner’s Cup championship run. But numbers only tell part of the story. Her intensity, edge, and willingness to step into uncomfortable moments have defined her presence just as much as her shooting.

That reputation was cemented back in June during a heated matchup against the Connecticut Sun. After Jacy Sheldon poked Caitlin Clark in the eye and made contact moments later, Cunningham responded with a hard foul that sent a clear message: her teammates would be protected. The physical play sparked debate, but among Fever fans, it turned Cunningham into something close to a cult hero — an enforcer unafraid of the consequences.
Off the court, Cunningham has embraced that same direct energy. Her no-nonsense approach has earned her praise, criticism, and even disciplinary attention from the WNBA at times. Still, she has never backed away from saying exactly what she thinks — and that honesty was front and center again on the latest episode of her Show Me Something podcast with close friend West Wilson.
This time, the subject wasn’t basketball.
As the two discussed recent headlines, the conversation turned to Tom Brady and the revelation that his current dog, Junie, is a clone of his previous dog, Lua, who passed away in 2023. Brady, an investor in biotech company Colossal Biosciences, used blood collected from Lua prior to her death to create the clone — a process he has openly spoken about.

Cunningham’s reaction was instant and unfiltered.
“That’s [expletive] weird,” she said flatly. “I don’t have a problem with him, but he does some weird [expletive]. Dude, how do you even clone a dog?”
The moment quickly spread online, with fans replaying the clip and debating whether Cunningham had crossed a line — or simply said what many were already thinking.
Brady, for his part, has been unapologetic. The seven-time Super Bowl champion has explained that his pets mean everything to his family and that cloning was a way to preserve that bond. “I love my animals,” Brady previously said. “They mean the world to me and my family.” From his perspective, the decision was deeply personal — and rooted in love.
Still, Cunningham’s comment tapped into a larger cultural debate about technology, ethics, and how far is too far when it comes to science and sentiment. While Brady appears perfectly comfortable with his choice, Cunningham made it clear she is not — and she wasn’t about to soften her stance for the sake of optics.

The exchange perfectly captures why Cunningham continues to draw attention wherever she goes. She plays hard. She speaks honestly. And she doesn’t seem particularly concerned about whose feelings might be bruised along the way.
Whether fans agree with her or not, one thing is undeniable: Sophie Cunningham knows how to command the spotlight. From defending Caitlin Clark on the court to calling out one of the most famous athletes on the planet off it, she continues to build a reputation as one of the WNBA’s most compelling voices.
And if history is any indication, this won’t be the last time something she says sends the sports world into a frenzy.
