TORONTO — The Toronto Blue Jays dealt a major blow today: José Berríos, the team’s starting pitcher, has been placed on the injured list (IL) due to right elbow inflammation, according to Sportsnet and journalist Shi Davidi. It’s a major blow to the Blue Jays’ pitching unit, especially as the season enters a pivotal period where every win could be crucial to a playoff berth.
In a swift move, the Blue Jays called up Paxton Schultz, a promising pitcher who has been showing impressive form, from Triple-A. The team’s pitching coach, in a press conference this morning, emphasized:
“We trust Paxton to fill the void, but José’s return is our top priority. He’s one of our most important pitchers.”
Speaking to reporters shortly after the announcement, Berríos expressed his disappointment:
“I am really disappointed that I cannot contribute to the team at this time. I always want to help my teammates win, but the injury is a challenge that I have to face. I promise myself and my teammates that this is not the end. I will come back stronger and fight for every game, every pitch.”
He also spoke about his fighting spirit:
“Every day of rest and recovery will prepare me to return to the field with full energy and determination. I want to come back to help the team win every win, every playoff opportunity. The injury does not define me — the will and determination do that.”
Berríos, 30, has been a mainstay for the Blue Jays in recent seasons, with a 3.42 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP this year. His absence puts a huge strain on the pitching line, forcing the team to rely on the bullpen and backup pitchers.
Teammate Marcus Semien shared in a brief interview:
“José is an inspiration in the locker room. He always fights until the end and gives us all energy. We will fight for him, and he will definitely come back stronger.”
Head coach Charlie Montoyo did not hide his concern:
“Losing Berríos is a shock, but we believe in the alternatives and the team spirit. It is a big challenge, but also an opportunity for other pitchers to shine.”
Paxton Schultz, who was recently called up, expressed his determination:
“I know the expectations are high, but I am ready to learn and help the team get through this difficult period. Hopefully José will recover quickly and return to full strength.”
Blue Jays fans, despite their concerns, have shown strong support on social media: “José, we believe in you!” or “Come back strong, Berríos — the Blue Jays need you!”
The injury, while challenging, is creating a story of resilience, will and indomitable spirit. Berríos has sent a clear message: this is not the end, but a new chapter in his journey. Blue Jays fans have reason to believe that he will return, bringing strength, determination and inspiration to the team, just in time for the decisive games to come.
