The New England Patriots sparked outrage as they ended the NFL regular season with a 23-16 win over the Buffalo Bills.
The six-time NFL champions had lost 13 of their first 16 games. Normally, a win in the season finale would console fans. However, that did not apply here.
More than 2,400 accounts expressed outrage in the New England Patriots’ Facebook post announcing the win on January 8. According to NFL rules, the team with the worst record in the regular season gets the first pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, meaning they have the opportunity to own the brightest young talent. The Patriots would have achieved this goal if they had lost in their 17th game of the season.

Instead, coach Jerod Mayo fielded his strongest lineup, as his opponent rested many key players to prepare for the playoffs. The Gillette Stadium team led 14-10 at halftime, then closed the match with a seven-point margin, breaking a six-game losing streak and dropping to fourth place in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Shortly after the match, captain Jerod Mayo was fired. The 38-year-old strategist had been with the club for 17 years in various positions, before being appointed to the hot seat to replace legendary coach Bill Belichick. Many American journalists believe that Mayo knew he would be fired and decided to retaliate against owner Robert Kraft with a victory over the Buffalo Bills.

In fact, the Patriots don’t need the number one pick to add personnel. The fourth-most successful team in the history of the league already has many quality Quarterbacks (starting linebackers) and will be looking to other positions on the offensive line. However, the New England representative should have had the opportunity to make profitable trades with the first rookie selection.

The number one pick in the 2025 NFL Draft belongs to the Tennessee Titans, while the next two picks belong to the Cleveland Browns and the New York Giants, respectively. The next rookie selection event of the American professional football league will take place in April in the city of Green Bay, Wisconsin.
