The Pittsburgh Steelers defense hasn’t quite looked like the fearsome group fans expected entering the 2025 season. Despite moments of brilliance, inconsistency and missed opportunities have cost them in key situations. But according to safety Juan Thornhill, the problems aren’t as big as they seem — and a breakthrough could be coming soon.
Speaking with reporters after Thursday’s practice, Thornhill struck an optimistic tone when asked about the defense’s recent struggles.
“We’re literally a couple plays away,” Thornhill said. “It’s not like teams are just running through us. We’re right there — we just need to finish those big moments. Once we do that, we’ll be good.”
The Steelers have been competitive in most games this season, but a few late defensive lapses have turned potential wins into losses. Missed tackles and breakdowns in coverage have been costly — including in last week’s 24–21 defeat, where Green Bay capitalized on two explosive plays downfield.
Still, Thornhill’s confidence is shared by several teammates. Linebacker T.J. Watt echoed similar sentiments earlier in the week, noting that “the details” have been the difference between victory and defeat. The defense ranks 12th in total yards allowed but has struggled on third downs and in the red zone, areas that often define close games.
Defensive coordinator Teryl Austin said the group’s communication and trust are improving. “It’s about executing in the moment,” Austin explained. “These guys know what to do — we just have to do it for 60 minutes.”
The Steelers’ next challenge comes against the Cleveland Browns, who rely heavily on their ground game and quick passes. If Pittsburgh can tighten up its coverage and maintain discipline against play-action, they’ll have a strong chance to get back on track.
For Thornhill, that’s all the motivation the defense needs.
“We’ve got the talent, we’ve got the mindset,” he said. “We just need to make those couple plays — and once we do, everybody will see what this defense can really be.”
