The Steelers have already made waves this season by pairing Aaron Rodgers with DK Metcalf, creating one of the league’s most physically imposing QB-WR duos. Metcalf brings the muscle, Rodgers brings the precision — but what the offense still lacks is a true vertical burner who can stretch defenses and keep safeties honest.
That’s where Brian Thomas Jr. enters the picture.
The Jaguars’ second-year wideout burst onto the scene as a rookie, displaying elite speed, crisp route-running, and the ability to blow past defenders. However, under Jacksonville’s new offensive system this year, Thomas has seen fewer targets and less involvement — leading many around the league to wonder if he could be a prime trade target for receiver-needy teams.
For Pittsburgh, the fit is almost too perfect. Rodgers thrives when he has a deep-speed option to complement his intermediate attack — think of the chemistry he once had with Marquez Valdes-Scantling or early-career Jordy Nelson. Pairing Rodgers’ arm with Thomas’ raw speed could unlock a new level of offensive dynamism.
“If the Steelers can land a guy like Brian Thomas Jr., it’s over for AFC defenses,” one anonymous NFC executive said. “Metcalf underneath and Thomas going vertical? Pick your poison.”
Adding Thomas would also free up offensive coordinator Matt Canada to open the playbook, introducing more motion, deep play-action concepts, and two-WR isolation sets designed to exploit mismatches. With Rodgers’ quick release and accuracy, even a few opportunities per game could turn into massive yardage plays.
Of course, any potential trade would depend on the Jaguars’ willingness to move their young receiver — and the price Pittsburgh is willing to pay. But sources say the Steelers’ front office is exploring aggressive options to solidify their playoff push.
If the move happens, Pittsburgh could go from dangerous to downright terrifying overnight.
