The hot topic currently causing heated debate on Twitter is the fierce online clash and criticism aimed at Emma Watson. Emma has been dragged into a controversy with J.K. Rowling, the “mother” of the blockbuster Harry Potter series, the very franchise that boosted Watson’s career when she portrayed Hermione.
Intense drama: Harry Potter’s creator accused of being anti-LGBT, Emma Watson and the cast speak out but get branded as “ungrateful”
Specifically, J.K. Rowling made a controversial statement seen as discriminatory toward transgender people: “Only women menstruate”, while also playing on word combinations of “men” and “women.” Soon after, several big names stood up against Rowling’s remarks, including Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe. Rowling later revealed that in the past, she had tried to escape an abusive marriage and had also been a victim of sexual assault in her youth.
Emma Watson then responded bluntly: “Trans people have the right to define who they are and deserve to live their own lives without being questioned or denied. I want all of my transgender followers to know that I, along with so many others around the world, see you, respect you, and love you.” She also shared links to various organizations supporting transgender rights. Watson’s tweet received 1.2 million likes within just 12 hours.
However, from that point on, Emma faced a wave of backlash: “I’ve never seen anyone so shamelessly ungrateful. J.K. Rowling was only revealing that she herself had been a victim of sexual assault, and this is how you respond? Your so-called ‘human rights advocacy’ is hypocritical — nothing but a joke.”
Emma wasn’t the only one targeted. Another Harry Potter actress, Bonnie Wright, also voiced her disagreement with Rowling’s views in a softer-toned tweet: “If ‘Harry Potter’ is a source of love and something that belongs to you, then that love is limitless. There is no judgment or questioning there. A trans woman is a woman.” Yet Bonnie, too, was attacked by netizens: “You’d be nothing without J.K. Rowling. You should be ashamed.”
