Three private email correspondences were released on Wednesday by Democrats on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.
In a response to the emails’ release, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt accused Democrats of having “selectively leaked emails” to “create a fake narrative to smear President Trump.”
Trump himself responded to the emails on Truth Social, calling it a ruse by Democrats to “deflect on how badly they’ve done on the Shutdown.”
“The Democrats are trying to bring up the Jeffrey Epstein Hoax again because they’ll do anything at all to deflect on how badly they’ve done on the Shutdown, and so many other subjects,” Only a very bad, or stupid, Republican would fall into that trap.”
The emails are to Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s longtime associate, who was convicted of sex trafficking in December 2021, and author Michael Wolff, who has written four books on Trump’s presidency.
The correspondences raise questions about the personal ties the president may have had with Epstein and how much knowledge of what prosecutors call Epstein’s yearslong effort to exploit underage girls. Trump has continuously denied knowledge about Epstein’s alleged crimes.
None of the emails were sent or received directly from Trump. Two of the emails predate his first presidency, while the third was sent seven months before Epstein was found dead in prison during Trump’s first term.
“There should be no deflections to Epstein or anything else, and any Republicans involved should be focused only on opening our Country, and fixing the massive damage caused by the Democrats,” Trump’s post said in part.
In an email sent to Maxwell on April 2, 2011, Epstein appeared to refer to Trump as a “dog that hasn’t barked.” He also implied Trump spent hours at his home with a woman the House committee describes as one of Epstein’s sex trafficking victims.
“I want you to realize that that dog that hasn’t barked is trump,” Epstein wrote. “[redacted] spent hours at my house with him … he has never once been mentioned. Police chief, etc.”
Maxwell responded with “I have been thinking about that…”
the email correspondence came just weeks after a British newspaper exposed Epstein, Maxwell and their associates in a series of articles.
The names and personal information of the victims were redacted from the released emails. However, Leavitt claimed the person referred to in the emails was Virginia Giuffre, who accused Epstein of arranging for her to have sexual encounters with a number of his friends.
She longly had insisted Trump was not among the men who victimized her.
According to the Associated Press, she had said under court oath that she believed Trump had no knowledge of Epstein’s misconduct.
Giuffre is believed to be one of the women Epstein “stole” from the spa. She claimed she worked as a spa attendant at Mar-a-Lago as a teenager and was approached by Maxwell in 2000. Giuffre has said she only met Trump once while she worked at Mar-a-Lago.
Giuffre died at the age of 41.
Leavitt said in a statement that Giuffre had “repeatedly said President Trump was not involved in any wrongdoing whatsoever and ‘couldn’t have been friendlier’ to her in their limited interactions.”
Maxwell is serving a 20-year prison term. She was moved to a minimum-security prison camp in Texas after she was interviewed by Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche in July.
CNN reported that Maxwell told Blanche in an interview that she “never witnessed the president in any inappropriate setting in any way,” and didn’t remember seeing Trump at Epstein’s house.
In an email sent from Epstein to Wolff on Jan. 31, 2019, Epstein appeared to refer to remarks made by Trump that he had Epstein thrown out of his Mar-a-Lago Club.
Epstein said in the email that he was “never a member ever” and implied that Trump knew about his dealings.
“Trump said he asked me to resign, never a member ever,” Epstein wrote. “Of course he knew about the girls, as he asked Ghislaine to stop.”
There is no further elaboration on Epstein’s claim in the email.
the White House has said Trump had barred Epstein from the club “for being a creep.” Trump told reporters in July that he had a falling out with Epstein because he hired away young women working at the spa at Mar-a-Lago.
“The fact remains that President Trump kicked Jeffrey Epstein out of his club decades ago for being a creep to his female employees, including Giuffre,” the statement said. “These stories are nothing more than bad-faith efforts to distract from President Trump’s historic accomplishments, and any American with common sense sees right through this hoax and clear distraction from the government opening back up again.”
The third email chain released was sent to Esptein from Wolff on Dec. 15, 2015, with the subject line “heads up.” CNN confirmed that date is the same day as a CNN Republican primary debate, but said there was no mention of Epstein from the debate manuscript.
“I hear CNN planning to ask Trump tonight about his relationship with you — either on air or in scrum afterwards,” Wolff wrote.
Epstein then asked Wolf, “If we were able to craft an answer for him, what do you think it should?”
“I think you should let him hang himself,” Wolff responded. “If he says he hasn’t been on the plane or to the house, then that gives you a valuable PR and political currency … Of course, it is possible that, when asked, he’ll say Jeffrey is a great guy and has gotten a raw deal and is a victim of political correctness, which is to be outlawed in a Trump regime.”
According to NPR, the emails released Wednesday are part of 23,000 documents the committee is reviewing. CNN reported the committee obtained the documents after subpoenaing the Epstein estate earlier this year.
“These latest emails and correspondence raise glaring questions about what else the White House is hiding and the nature of the relationship between Epstein and the President,” Oversight Ranking Member Rep. Rober Garcia said in a statement.
Republicans on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform released 20,000 additional pages of documents from Jeffrey Epstein’s estate in response to the Democrats’ release on Wednesday. The additional documents were released hours after the first.
In September, House Democrats released more than 200 pages of a birthday book for Epstein, created for his 50th birthday in 2003. Among the pages released was a note that appeared to be signed by Trump. Trump has denied any personal connections to Epstein.
Democrats are expected to force a vote to release the files related to Epstein following the swearing-in of the House’s newest member, Adelita Grijalva. and will be the final necessary signature on the discharge petition linked to the Epstein files.
