President Trump raises possibility of declaring emergency in Washington, after Mayor Bowser said city police will not cooperate with ICE.
In a post on the social network Truth Social on September 14, US President Donald Trump blamed “radical left Democrats” for pressuring Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser to announce that she would stop cooperating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). He warned that when that happens, “crime will come back”.
“To the people and businesses of Washington, DC. Don’t worry, I will support you and not let that happen. I will declare a state of emergency and put the city under direct federal control if necessary,” Trump wrote.
Mayor Bowser’s office did not respond to Trump’s comments.
The president previously placed the D.C. police department under direct federal control and sent federal law enforcement, including ICE agents, to Washington. It is unclear when the force’s mission will end.
Trump claimed that thanks to the moves, Washington “went from being one of the most dangerous and murderous cities in America and even the world to one of the safest in just a few weeks.”
Mayor Bowser has praised Trump’s decision for helping to dramatically reduce crime and signed an order requiring city law enforcement to coordinate with federal forces. However, Ms. Bowser later announced that Washington police would not cooperate with ICE.
