CHICAGO — The baseball world was rocked when his family confirmed that legendary Chicago Cubs icon Andre Dawson has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. The news, announced in a brief news release this morning, sent shock and anxiety through the baseball community and Cubs fans around the world.
“He’s been through this once before, but it’s back and it’s back and it’s back with more vigor. Andre is fighting it with all his might,” Dawson’s family said, asking for respect and prayers from fans.
Dawson, nicknamed “The Hawk,” entered the Hall of Fame in 2010 after a 21-year career that included 438 home runs, 1,591 RBIs and 314 stolen bases. He underwent 12 knee surgeries, and continued to play through pain — a testament to the iron will of a warrior.

Dawson went public with his prostate cancer diagnosis in 2012 and underwent successful surgery. Since then, he has become a fixture in men’s health awareness campaigns, even attending Fans for the Cure events to promote early screening.
News of Dawson’s illness quickly shook Wrigley Field and the entire Cubs community. Major fan groups were immediately covered with hashtags: #PrayForDawson, #HawkForever, and photos of Dawson in his iconic No. 8 jersey.
One longtime fan wrote: “He wasn’t just a player — he was part of our childhood. If Andre fought, we fought with him.”
While the diagnosis was confirmed, Dawson’s family and the Cubs have refused to reveal details about the stage of the disease or treatment. “Please give us time. Andre has always been strong, and he will not give up this time,” Dawson’s family stressed.
Multiple inside sources say Dawson has canceled all of his appearances this fall, including a Cubs fan meet, to focus on his treatment.
Andre Dawson left a legacy of more than just hitting home runs or playing defense. He was a model of resilience, loyalty, and a relentless fighting spirit—values that defined the Cubs in the 1980s and 1990s.
Dawson is now entering the biggest battle of his life. And once again, Cubs fans and the entire baseball world are behind him, sending their faith, prayers, and love.
