Warriors Ready to Cut Rising Prospect? Stunning Move Could Clear Path for Pat Spencer.P1

The Golden State Warriors have survived a decade of dynasty twists, aging stars, and relentless headline storms — but Steve Kerr may have just lit the fuse on the next one. In a jaw-dropping moment that instantly sent shockwaves through the Bay Area, Kerr openly admitted he wants Pat Spencer on the main roster. And not in some vague, hopeful, someday kind of way — he wants him now. The catch? To make that happen, someone must go. And the name sitting uncomfortably at the top of the list is Trayce Jackson-Davis.

“It’d be great to find a way to get him on the roster,” Kerr said, his tone equal parts praise and frustration. “He’s kind of the perfect guy to have as a backup. He can win you games like he almost did tonight, but if he doesn’t play he brings the same energy and the same attitude next game. It’d be great if we could find a way but it’s a little tricky.”

Tricky is one word for it. Explosive might be another.

Because if you take Kerr’s quote at face value — and NBA executives certainly are — the path is painfully clear: waive Jackson-Davis, promote Spencer, and brace for the backlash. And based on the coach’s enthusiasm, this isn’t some wild theory. It’s a door the Warriors are already halfway through.

Spencer’s rise hasn’t just been surprising — it’s been undeniable. Slowly but decisively, he has carved out a role in Kerr’s rotation, transforming from a two-way experiment into a nightly necessity. His recent run has been nothing short of electric. In a narrow loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, Spencer erupted for 16 points, four rebounds, and four assists on hyper-efficient shooting. The game before? Seventeen points, three boards and six assists against the Thunder, again lighting up the floor with poise beyond his experience.

Warriors next move is painfully obvious after recent Steve Kerr comment

And then came the breakthrough: Spencer’s first career start, a fearless 19-point, seven-assist performance that helped the Warriors grind out a gritty 99–94 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Twenty-plus minutes in all three games, culminating in a 29-minute takeover in Cleveland — that is not fringe-player behavior. That is rotation-player reality.

Kerr sees it. His staff sees it. The locker room sees it. The fans definitely see it.

The contract does not.

Spencer is on a two-way deal, capped by rules that prevent Kerr from deploying him freely. To convert him to a standard roster spot, the Warriors must sacrifice one of their 15 guaranteed players. And when you scan that list, the answer stares right back: Trayce Jackson-Davis.

Jackson-Davis hasn’t been awful — just invisible. In his second season, he has appeared in only 13 games, logging a mere 11.7 minutes a night. His averages — 4.1 points and 3.1 rebounds on 51.3% shooting — hardly move the needle. And with Al Horford and rookie Quinten Post anchoring the center rotation, not to mention Draymond Green’s inevitable small-ball minutes, Jackson-Davis has no clear pathway to relevance.

Spencer, meanwhile, is practically kicking down the door.

This is the uncomfortable calculus of the modern NBA: production beats potential, immediacy beats development, and roster spots are ruthless. If Spencer is as good as Kerr claims — and recent performances make that case loudly — then the Warriors are almost obligated to make room for him, sentiment be damned.

And that is why league insiders believe this move isn’t just possible. It’s probable.

Kerr wants Spencer. The rotation needs Spencer. The numbers justify Spencer. And Jackson-Davis, through no dramatic fault of his own, is the odd man out.

If the Warriors pull the trigger — and all signs suggest they might — the real question becomes: what happens next? Will Spencer become Golden State’s newest hidden gem… or the spark to a much bigger roster shake-up?

Stay tuned — because this story isn’t done exploding.
